Clara Weatherall, Laura Lee, Steven Holl, Pierre Goad, Daisy Goodwin, and Alwen Williams celebrate the start of construction of Maggie's Barts in London.

Steven Holl Architects has broken ground on Maggie’s Barts, a free cancer center in northeast London located within St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Conceived as a three-story urban townhouse that contrasts with the clinical feel of the surrounding medical campus, Maggie’s Barts will incorporate daylighting strategies to provide bright, open spaces for visitors.

“With the deep conviction and dedication of Laura Lee and her staff, Maggie’s Barts is finally breaking ground,” Steven Holl, FAIA, said in a release. “After making my first sketches years ago, I am extremely grateful for this special day.”

Maggie’s offers emotional and social support for people with cancer as well as their family and friends in its 18 facilities spread around the United Kingdom. “I’m delighted that construction of a Maggie’s Centre at Barts has been able to start in earnest,” Laura Lee, chief excecutive of Maggie’s, said in the release. “[The groundbreaking] brings us one step closer to the Centre opening its doors to bring this much needed support to people living and working in the City and East London.”
