The United States economy added 280,000 jobs in May, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in the latest monthly employment report.
More jobs were added in May than in April. The bureau, which updates the numbers after they are initially reported, revised April’s job growth from 223,000 jobs added to 221,000 jobs added. If May’s job growth is not significantly revised, it will have been the strongest job growth of 2015. On Wednesday, payroll-processing company ADP and Moody’s Analytics reported that the economy added 201,000 jobs in May.
Construction added 17,000 jobs in May, which is less than half of what the industry added in April. Manufacturing added 7,000 jobs, a significant leap from April’s 1,000 jobs added. Architectural and engineering services added 4,500 jobs in May, up from 2,300 jobs added the month prior.
Within construction, specialty trade contractors added 12,300 jobs, heavy and civil engineering construction added 400 jobs, and 4,400 jobs were added in the construction of buildings. The nonresidential construction of buildings sector added 2,600 jobs in May, up from April’s loss of 7,500 jobs.
