Project Description

A Dedicated Environmentalist Couple Turned to Designer Kimberly Grigg to Fashion an Ultra-Sustainable Home without Sacrificing Luxury.

The Leak family, environmentalists at heart, wanted a new sustainable blueprint for their 11-year-old home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The couple turned to Kimberly Grigg, CEO and principal designer of Knotting Hill Interiors, to carry out the fully green, yet stylish, ground-up renovation of their home. Kimberly Grigg and her design team worked to incorporate many green-inspired design ideas of the family, including reclaimed wood beams in the living room; a water conserving, foot-pedal sink in the kitchen; a spiral staircase acquired from the burned ruins of a 15th century castle that was retrofitted to meet current building codes; and a tree root from once under the house that was recycled into an outside mantle and bench for an outdoor living room.

Kimberly designed with not only sustainable aesthetics in mind, but also with special touches equating to living a truly green lifestyle and being conscience of conservation at the core of each design decision. These sustainable elements included a tankless water heater, high-efficiency HVAC system with Hepa filters, nature-friendly dual-flush toilets, and even a prewired garage for electric cars- all of which were combined to create a custom home that is not only environmentally responsible but beautiful as well.

Luxury, by contrast, was the goal of Kimberly’s interior design pursuit, which added an abundance of indulgent furnishings, textiles, flooring, and wall color to the rationalized theme of sustainability.

After the renovation, the family waited one additional week before moving back into their home. Their goal was the green-inspired move-in date of Earth Day. Kimberly made this dream a reality for the Leaks by designing with a theme of sustainability, yet without sacrificing livable luxury.
