Project Description

This 30,000-square-foot structure is placed by
the secondary entrance of the entire pavilion. Symmetry was an integral role
within the design, with repeated arches going down the length of the pavilion. Each
different shape of arch supports a different purpose, such as support for the façade,
hanging of the traditional curtains, and roof framework.

FROM MILAN EXPO 2015:

Theme: "Heritage in Harvest"

Oman is located in one of the driest areas on the planet. With 3,165 km of coastline, lapped by rugged andmountainous lands and deserts, whipped by the sun, the Sultanate of Oman has faced enormous challenges to ensure that a sustainable and safe food production.
Faced with a constant shortage of water, proper management and distribution of water resources has become of utmost priority.
Water is the keystone of its agriculture system, and its crops and livestock depend on it. With negligible rainfall and limited groundwater reserves, the agricultural sector still depends largely on the ancient irrigation systems, the aflaj. These underground channels exploit the Earth’s gravity to distribute water wisely and rhythmically where and when it is needed. Five of these canals have been recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. In many villages the Aflaj animate tales and legends, generate prosperity, and are the symbol of ingenuity.
The pavilion, which is spread over an area of 2,790 square meters, conveys the care with which the Omanis protect, manage and preserve water as a vital and precious resource. Visitors can taste local produce such as honey, dates and camel’s milk, or stroll in the garden that is divided into three spaces, symbolizing the sun, the sand, the sea.
