Project Description

2015 Urban Open Space Award Competition Shortlist Project
Text from the Urban Land Institute:

Located at the heart of Singapore’s city centre, against the backdrop of its signature skyline, Marina Bay presents an exciting array of opportunities to live, work and play. The larger Marina Bay area was progressively reclaimed over a 40 year period from the 1970s to allow for the seamless extension of the Central Business District and the creation of a new city, focused around an urban waterfront. Today, Marina Bay has been transformed into a vibrant precinct with a mix of commercial, residential, hotel and entertainment uses set amidst well-landscaped public spaces and parks that serve as green lungs, event venues and gathering spaces for those living and working there.

The waterfront promenade around the 48ha waterbody at Marina Bay is one of the key urban spaces within the city. It comprises a continuous 3.5km long loop with two pedestrian bridges that link together the adjacent developments, attractions and event spaces. Marina Bay has the twin attributes of both water and greenery and is physically and visually connected to the adjacent open spaces, including Singapore’s latest attraction, Gardens by the Bay, which has increased the urban space
within the city by another 100ha.

The Bay is easily accessible by public transport and has become a focal point for events of all types, including large-scale events, such as the opening and closing ceremonies of the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games, the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix, iLight Marina Bay and the annual Marina Bay Singapore Countdown. These have been complemented by regular community and sporting events and activities, such as mass walks, runs, weekend markets, outdoor concerts and sailing and canoeing programmes that have attracted both locals and visitors and brought buzz and vibrancy to the precinct throughout the year.
