Tokyo-based Kengo Kuma and Associates recently unveiled its competition-winning design of the Pleyel train station. The competition, “Saint-Denis Pleyel Emblematic Train Station,” is set to be a launching pad for the redevelopment of Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of Paris.

The station aims to connect the suburb with the capital using a massive rail network, Grand Paris Express, in turn expanding the metropolitan scale of the city and its surrounding communes. Spiraling levels and steel frames that summon railroad tracks punctuate the passage of time and history, and the future programs built around the station (shops, a library) present a fresh new face for Pleyel. It is expected that 250,000 travelers will pass through the station daily, and there are currently over 22,000 jobs within 3,000 feet of the station.
