Innovative design of these cabins was ideally suited to the goal: build a camp designed to inspire young girls to consider careers in design and construction. The cabins were constructed with solid wood panels using locally-sourced wood damaged by pine beetles. Floors and roofs were made using 12-inch thick Brettstapel panels; this solid timber construction system uses softwood timber posts connected with hardwood timber dowels instead of glue or nails. Walls were made using 2-layer 5.5-inch and 3-layer 8.5-inch ICLT panels. ICLT is a prefabricated, cross-laminated, solid wood panel system made using layers of pine stock milled from waste wood, then laid in alternating directions using no fasteners or adhesives. Because the CO2 content of the already-dead wood is bound into these durable wood panels, the carbon footprint is reduced over the structure’s life cycle. Innovative utilization of both wood members puts the project at the forefront of sustainable construction.
