Project Description

Located in a residential area of College Point (Queens), N.Y., P.S. 29 was constructed in 1927. RKTB designed a new addition to provide 232 new desks, new instructional spaces, new dining and kitchen facilities, new playground facilities, and a new elevator accessing all new and existing floors. A limited amount of existing space was also renovated to accommodate some program functions.

The 26,000 SF addition is three stories in height and connects to the east wing of the existing building. The first floor of the new wing is at grade, eliminating the need for exterior stairs and ramps. Internal stairs, an elevator and lift connect the new wing to the existing first floor level. Floors two and three align with the existing floors.

RKTB’s design complies with the NYC Green Schools Guide and Rating System. The school opened in September 2012 and all construction was completed in 2013.
