Project Description

VIA WOODHOUSE TINUCCI

In 2009 we were contacted by two dads with a passion to create a 4300sf learning environment that promoted critical thinking, problem solving and hands-on learning. Our concept was to create a space that became a more active partner in the learning and inspiration process. We joined them early in their mission to build their business and we passionately led the effort to help them develop their programs and flagship facility. Three labs ‘float’ inside the larger volume and promote learning opportunities inside and out. Marker board walls on almost every surface promote creative expression and exploration. Plywood walls become instruments for exploration as materials are fastened to them and interrogated, and metal frameworks in the ceilings of the labs allow for all kinds of devices and tools to be hung from the ceilings. At the front of the space, a large garage door opens one classroom into the larger public space to allow everyone to participate in the experience, and twenty-foot high ceilings allow rockets to be launched. To make the ‘hands on’ even more real, we built the reception desk ourselves from over 150 layers of recycled cardboard.
