Project Description

The Sawyer Pool House is a 1,400 square foot, freestanding pavilion that compliments the previously built vacation house owned by a Chicago based client. in conjuction with the existing main house, the pavillion helps to define exterior space around a new swimming pool. The pavillion presents a modernist counterpoint to the traditional main house, but uses a similar material palette. The first floor contains a screened outdoor shower and dressing area, a bathroom with access directly from the pool area, a large living space with a kitchenette, and a bedroom suite with a private screen porch. The second level is a sleeping loft space connected to the first floor with an open steel stair. The living space has floor to ceiling windows and bi-parting sliding doors which orient the space toward the pool. Cedar sunscreens mounted on an industrial tracks slide to protect the interior space from the sun or, shutter the windows when the Owners are away. The building rests on a wood deck plinth, which helps to give the structure a light, weightless appearance.
