Project Description

This remodel and expansion of a 1970’s home is a true transformation. The design intent was to open up the floorplan and connect all zones inside and out to create a modern living space for a family of 5, while preserving many of the unique details that the family loved. The original wood walls and post and beam construction of the interior were maintained and strengthened, as well as the impressive lava rock fireplace, while additions on the front doubled the square footage adding a bunkroom and additional bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate the family as it grow and changes. An existing bridge across the second story, which is accessed by a dramatic steel plate and mesh staircase, was opened up and now connects the new and existing portions. The clerestory windows above the bridge frame the nearby mountains and a reading nook at the end offers elevated views of the wooded valley.

The new entry addition is a glass and steel “jewel box” that initiates a second, more contemporary language juxtaposed with the traditional reclaimed barnwood siding, and whose materials and feel will be carried into a future pool house renovation. Steel was added to the original stone fireplace as it was rebuilt as a way to echo the combination of the old and new languages. Large windows and glass doors were inserted in the front and back of the house and open up onto large decks to give the family more outdoor living space, and to mirror the large windows of the additions. They also create an easier passage through the house, connecting the tennis court in front to the pool in back, and make the home a unified whole.
