Project Description
Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM) is a laboratory uniquely designed to catalyze collaboration between biomedical scientists from five neighboring institutions all working towards new breakthroughs in stem cell research.
Completed in 2011, the four-story, 150,700 square foot structure is located in the center of San Diego’s biotechnology cluster and consists of junior and senior office pods, a robotics lab, café, and 150-seat auditorium.
The design by Fentress Architects places standard lab modules in opposing directions in order to encourage impromptu meet-ups and dialogue. Break rooms are shared between two floors and stairways act as areas for “creative collision.” As a whole, Fentress Architects set out to design SCRM as a place where ideas and people constantly intersect.
