Amanpreet Birgisson's Modular Tile Luminaire System.

A competition organized by Corcoran College of Art and Design instructor Andrea Hartranft, senior associate with C.M. Kling & Associates in Alexandria, Va., for her fall 2007 lighting design class has yielded dividends for the student whose design was selected as the winner.

For the competition—really a class assignment—Corcoran graduate student Amanpreet Birgisson designed and built a working prototype of an illuminated tile, called the Modular Tile Luminaire System. Visa Lighting, the competition’s judge, was so impressed with Birgisson’s design that the company is discussing putting it into production. Click through to see a photo of the winning design.
