Recently, Yale University announced that American fashion designer Ralph Lauren and Ricky Lauren, his wife, have established a professorship at the Yale School of Architecture to honor their friend, architect Charles Gwathmey, who died Aug. 3, 2009.

Gwathmey graduated with a Master’s of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture in 1962 and went on to become one of its most distinguished alumni, according to the university’s president, Richard C. Levin.

Architect, educator, and theorist Peter Eisenman, the current Louis I. Kahn Visiting Professor of Architectural Design at Yale School of Architecture, has been named as the first Charles Gwathmey Professor. The professorship for senior design faculty both acknowledges Gwathmey’s contributions to architecture and honors those named to the position.
