Broadway Street in Salem, Oregon, is a neighborhood in transition. Referred to by the City as a “renewal zone,” it’s a historic area that is beginning to experience commercial and cultural reinvigoration. When Salem Alliance Church approached us to design their new 47,000-sf building, we saw a tremendous opportunity to address the goals of the Church and also provide a new architectural and civic anchor in this developing neighborhood.
Broadway Commons is the home to Salem Free Medical Clinic, Broadway Coffeehouse, as well as an assortment of meeting spaces and classrooms—all geared to serve the community.With an emphasis on programmatic efficiency and aesthetic design, the building’s typologies are layered vertically. Form and materials express program relationships through the exterior façade. From the light-colored brick, generous canopies and large glazing of the first floor retail spaces to the floor-to-ceiling glass and custom wood ceiling of the fourth floor prayer center, Broadway Commons brings the community together through its architecture and helps the Salem Alliance Church achieve its mission of outreach and benevolence in this resurgent neighborhood.
