Project Description

The existing 1957 home had good bones, but bad compartmentalized planning. The 1,896 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 bath house was nowhere near gracious by today’s standards. This was especially true of the 96 square foot kitchen. The new owner wanted a home with a more modern living arrangement, an open kitchen-dining-family room plan that would allow the family to cook, eat, play and entertain together.

To accomplish this, the original 8’ x 12’ kitchen, dining and living rooms were added on to in order to create a more inviting space to live and entertain in. Walls between the three spaces were torn down and the roof was raised to bring the existing 8’ walls up to 10’ which allowed for the addition of tray ceilings. A new expanded laundry and drop room was added adjacent to the garage and kitchen. To take advantage of the beautiful backyard and view of the old oak tree, the remodeled kitchen-dining-living space was tied to a new exterior covered entertaining area, complete with a summer kitchen.

The new 350 square foot kitchen now offers the owner 23 linear feet of counter space for food prep, buffet service and counter dining for six at the gracious island. The single ceiling mounted bulb was replaced with can lights, pendant lights, under-counter lighting as well as task lighting at the range. The dilapidated red cabinets were replaced with white Shaker-style cabinets with the uppers continuing up to the ceiling for maximum storage. The colorful backsplash mosaic tile brings warmth to the neutral toned room, while stainless appliances give it a clean updated feel. New wood flooring was laid in the kitchen and throughout the new dining-living space. Energy efficient windows and doors were installed throughout, along with spray foam insulation, to bring the home’s energy consumption down while adding an abundance of natural light to the remodeled space. Additional energy saving devices include a new high efficiency air conditioning system and a new gas tankless water heater.
