Project Description
Long Lake Point residence interacts with the steeply wooded sloping site. Function and massing elements step down the hill gradually while reflecting the surrounding nature and optimizing the over 180 degrees of lake views.
The form of the residence developed along a traditional separation of public, private and service spaces. These three massing elements are connected with a transparent link that offers glimpses of the lake as you arrive and a panoramic view as you enter. The copper barrel vault roofs integrate well with the tree canopies, blending with the scalloping layering of the tree lines of the surrounding maple woods.
The home was partially inspired by the Steam Ship Minnehaha on Lake Minnetonka. The nautical half-hull theme resolved planning issues and the critical element of how the home reaches out to the lake at the closest point. Wood boat construction techniques were utilized for the roof form and the battered terminus of the masonry base drew inspiration from Minnehaha’s swept stern.
