Project Description

The TechWorks! conceptual design by Bucher/Borges Group (BBG) has been approved by the City of Binghamton’s Committee on Architecture and Urban Design (CAUD). Unanimously approved, Commissioners said the design is “perfectly matched to the Center for Technology and Innovation’s (CTI) mission,” “exciting” and “brilliant.”

BBG leads the team of consultants designing the TechWorks! center of the study of technology and industry the Southern Tier region of New York, where dozens of technology firms, such as IBM, were born. CTI is developing the project as an adaptive reuse and addition to a 30,000 square foot vintage ice cream factory.

The main focus of the exterior design is an energy exhibit and entrance pavilion with a wide variety of renewable technologies: wind turbines, solar thermal panels, photovoltaic panels, a storm water management system, and geothermal heating and cooling. The exhibit will provide energy for the center while educating visitors about different strategies of being green, complete with real time energy meters. The interior will feature both permanent and temporary exhibits of manufacturing and products.
