Although steel and concrete have taken the place of wood as structural strengtheners in modern architecture, wood’s environmental benefits are leading to a comeback. Fast Company staffer Diana Budds takes a look at the benefits of using wood including its better fire resistance and thermal properties.
Budds looks at the nine best timber buildings of 2016 as listed by the Wood Products Council, which include high-profile projects created with wood such as the Chicago Horizon by Ultramoderne:
Ultramoderne’s pavilion for the Chicago Biennial received recognition for its use of cross-laminated timber roof panels—the largest shippable panels available—and glue-laminated timber columns, which helped the design stay within its $75,000 construction budget. (Never mind that it kind of looks like a shoddy, generic rest stop in person.)
