The AIA Announces the 2016 Institute Honor Awards for Regional & Urban Design

Forward-looking proposals for feeding the growing population of an Arkansas city and for increasing accessibility to one of the nation's biggest cultural institutions took top honors in the AIA's Regional and Urban Design Awards.

The AIA announced the recipients of its 2016 Institute Honor Awards for Regional & Urban Design, which recognize the best in architecture a large scale, on Friday. This year’s winners are a proposal that addresses an Arkansas city’s future growth and its expected needs, and a master plan for a national cultural institution that increases accessibility to its many collections.

The 2016 AIA Institute Honor Awards for Regional & Urban Design jury was led by Robert Herman, FAIA, of EDA Architects, and included Christine Dunn, AIA, of Sasaki Associates; Mayor Nelda Martinez, of the City of Corpus Christi; Joel Tomei, FAIA, of Joel Tomei, Architect; and Christine Vina, AIA, of VIA Metropolitan Transit.

Jury Comments: A refreshing example of a remarkable plan with tremendous local support. It codifies all the opportunities we have to provide these services to our cities. It addresses a big issue, one that could be replicated in many communities across the country.
