The Netherlands has unveiled Europe Building, a structure built in Amsterdam to host European Union (EU) meetings and events for the next six months. Co-designed by Amsterdam-based Heijmans and DUS Arhitects, Europe Building is a stunning example of modular architecture featuring a 3D-printed facade.

The textured patterns and shapes on Europe Building’s facade symbolize the diversity and convergence of countries within the EU. The white façade is constructed with playfully shaped, 3D-printed sails, which pay homage to yachts that were previously on the building’s site. The curves, structured in various styles, also function as eaves for the blue-lighted, 3D-printed benches. The surface of each bench is filled with illuminated concrete, powered by Dutch technology company Philips.

The Netherlands took over the EU Presidency from Luxembourg at the beginning of this year, and will be chairing meetings for the union by June 30, 2016. The 6-month presidency rotates among all member states within the EU.

A total of 135 international meetings will take place in the 700-square meter (over 7,500 square feet) space, in which about 17,500 participants can be seated. The building’s exterior and illuminated benches are open to the public.

“It is wonderful to see how passers-by sit in the façade. It really becomes a public place to stay,” said Martijn van Wijk, architect at DUS Architects, in a statement.

All 3D elements were produced with a life-size 3D-printer of the 3D Print Canal House owned by DUS Architects. The printer, which adopts the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology, is able to melt bio plastics and build up complicated structures in an accurate way.
