WalletHub’s Richie Bernardo analyzed the efficiency of car- and home-energy consumption across the continuous 48 states to reveal the most and least energy efficient states in the nation.
Americans spend nearly $2,000 a year on energy, half of which goes to heating and cooling bills alone. But energy has a much larger impact on the economy and environment as a whole. An estimated $520 billion investment for energy measures could save America’s economy more than $1.2 trillion and reduce greenhouse emissions by 1.1 gigatons annually.
According to WalletHub’s study, New York was the overall most efficient state, with Vermont, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Utah high atop the list as well.
On the flip-side, South Carolina was the least energy-efficient state, with Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, and Arkansas keeping it company toward the bottom of the ranks.
