SURI Provides New Solution For European Refugee Crisis

While currently being deployed to house millions of refugees, the adaptable shelter can also be used as field hospitals, healthcare centers, and mobile operating units.

Created by Spanish firm Suricatta Systems, the Shelter Unit for Rapid Installation (SURI) allows for easy transport and assembly to assist displaced refugees.

The system is being deployed to house the millions of people fleeing the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, creating a practical solution to help manage the refugee crisis in Europe.

The accordion-like shelters are constructed out of a lightweight framework surrounded by multiple layers of DuPont Tyvek, a UV-resistant breathable material often used in construction, leaving voids within the exterior of each unit that can be filled with readily available natural resources, such as clay or sand. All materials used are recyclable or biodegradable, and the creators claim SURI has a 10-year life span. Each unit is also outfitted with a rooftop water collection system that filters rain into drinkable water and solar panels to power the habitat.

While currently being used as a housing system, SURI can be reassembled to operate as emergency field hospitals, primary healthcare centers, or mobile operating units.

The SURI project was initiated by the department of innovation with Spanish construction company Urbana de Exteriores. The company established Suricatta Systems after helping in efforts to rebuild after disasters in Spain and Haiti.
