The U.S. economy grew
by 223,000 jobs in June, according to the latest monthly employment report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). June’s figure is down from May’s downwardly revised growth of 254,000 jobs and the average monthly gain of 250,000 jobs for the prior 12 months. The BLS data is also below June’s total nonfarm employment gain reported by payroll-processing company ADP and its partner Moody’s Analytics, which found that the economy increased by 237,000 jobs in June.
The construction industry—which saw gains of 30,000 jobs in April and 15,000 jobs in May—experienced a net-change of zero job growth in June. The manufacturing industry did grow slightly, by 4,000 jobs, down from May’s growth of 7,000. Architectural and engineering services also experienced slowed growth compared to the previous month. This sector increased by 4,400 jobs, down from a gain of 6,000 jobs in May.
Within the
construction industry, specialty trade contractors and building construction posted losses of 1,900 and 1,600 jobs, respectively. The residential building construction took a heavy hit in June, decreasing by 6,100 jobs.
