Massachusetts may have a lock on the top spot in most energy-efficient state rankings, but when it comes to LEED buildings per capita in 2013, a Midwest metropolis grabs the number one slot.
But wait a minute! We’ve got a bone to pick: Washington, D.C., our stomping grounds, isn’t included because technically it is a federal district and not a state. If it were ranked, however, Illinois would be sent packing to second place, as DC certified 32.45 square feet of space per person in 2013 (for a total of 19.52 million square feet divided by 601,723 residents).
