Airstream Hotel in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Stay overnight in one of Hofmann Architecture's restored Airstreams.

Architect Matthew Hofmann, LEED AP, and his father Wally Hofmann, LEED AP, have always loved vintage Airstreams. Both have at some point spent a year living in one of the distinctive, silver trailers—in fact, we covered Matthew’s in the June 2011 issue of RA. Hofmann Architecture, of which Matthew is president and Wally is VP, now specializes in renovating and customizing Airstreams.

So it only makes sense that the firm is introducing an Airstream hotel. Located within the Santa Barbara RV Park in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Santa Barbara Auto Camp contains five beautifully restored and renovated 1960’s and 70’s Airstreams, each available for $139 to $169 per night. The project is a joint venture with the land’s owners; the Hofmanns themselves own the trailers. A steady flow of guests has kept the hotel busy since its opening in January 2013.
