Denver International Airport, Denver, Colorado, 1991-95

When it comes to specialization, architecture firms can focus on residential, multifamily, government—or if you’re Denver’s Fentress Architects, airports. Six of the airports that the firm has designed around the world are now on exhibit at the Denver Art Museum as part of Now Boarding: Fentress Airports + The Architecture of Flight. Denver International Airport, South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Mineta San Jose International Airport, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and Los Angeles International Airport are all examples of Fentress’s goal to make airports more than just bus stops for planes and passengers, to make them functional, beautiful, and a pleasant part of what is often a stressful experience. The exhibit also covers the history of airport design through digital art, animation, models, drawings, and photographs. As you jet through the exhibit, watch airports move from simple strips of grass to what we know the best of them to be today: points for cities to pivot around, or mini cities in themselves, with retail, hotels, restaurants, entertainment, and even art. Through Oct. 7. • denverartmuseum.org
