The Center for Architecture in New York is hosting “V’SOSKE Rugs by Architects: Architecture in Transition 1979-1993,” which opened this week and continues through May 28. From 1979 to 1993, V’SOSKE—the company that originated the hand-tufted wool rug technique—commissioned 23 architects to design 38 unique rugs. Each of those original, architect-designed rugs is featured in this exhibition.
Prominent and emerging architects were invited to work with the company’s forward-thinking design and marketing directors to create handmade rugs that are as much an architectural, artistic statement as they are floor coverings. Participants include Arquitectonica, Michael Graves, Charles Gwathmey, Laurie Hawkinson and Henry Smith-Miller, Steven Holl, Richard Meier, and Tod Williams and Billie Tsien.
The exhibition is free and the Center for Architecture is open every day except Sunday.
