Pritzker Prize–winning architect Richard Meier, AIA, designed an office building for Rio de Janiero, which will mark the affluent neighborhood with his signature white-wash stamp. Playing to the neighborhood’s Oceanside setting, Meier took a minimalist approach to designing both the interior and exterior of the building. He capitalized on the city’s temperate climate by reducing the building supplies, which would be necessary to protect and insulate similar buildings in other less ideal locations. The outside of the office building is made up of white aluminum and glass, juxtaposed by a concrete wall. Meier’s designs, known for their modern flair, will probably feel right at home in the South American country. Bernhard Karpf, the project’s architect, told Artinfo that “Brazil is the country of modern architecture.” Karpf draws comparisons between the country’s architecture and Le Corbusier’s style, making it seem almost as if Meier was meant to design there.
