The design for this bicycles-only parking garage for the employees of Novartis, features 16 large-scale circular ceiling recesses outfitted with a custom lighting solution. The elongated underground space, which can house more than 800 bicycles, has corrugated concrete walls, an exposed concrete ceiling, and PU flooring in a deep blue color.

To complement the garage’s pared-down material palette and to address the relatively low ceiling height–about 9 feet–lighting designers Licht Kunst Licht developed a graphically bold lighting element to illuminate the space. Sixteen luminous “wheels” with an angular and slanting perimeter shell made of white translucent PMMA is divided into 12 segments. Inside the fixture cavity, an LED ribbon strip with a 120-degree light distribution is installed on a mounting plate with the drivers on the rear side. This provides uniform light dispersion across the 23’ dimeter of the ceiling recess. Further, to provide a sense of orientation and safety for this subterranean space, a daylighting sensing system ensures that a level of 150 lux is maintained throughout the day.

Jury Comments:
The space feels open and welcoming even though it is underground. • The simple but bold form of the custom ceiling luminaires strikes the right balance for the space.
