Louis Vuitton has used architecture to frame a clothing collection before, and the fashion house’s latest show was no exception. Following last year’s resort show at the John Lautner-designed Bob Hope estate, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1996, is the latest structure to showcase the company’s collection.
L.V. is not the only fashion company staging shows like this: “The Resort season has turned into a mini architecture tour,” Nicole Phelps wrote on Vogue Runway last year. When the company announced the location in April, Vanessa Friedman wrote in The New York Times about the trend (which includes other big names like Dior, Gucci, and Chanel): “The goal is to position themselves as the royalty of the industry: authorities not just on clothes, but on all related aspects of design and lifestyle and on sucking you, the fashion buyer or the fashion viewer, ever deeper into their orbits.”
