North Carolina’s 2015 Matsumoto Prize Awards Six Modern Houses

This year’s Matsumoto Prize Awards, an annual awards program distinguishing Modernist residences, were given out to six projects out of a total of 13 submissions—three Jury awards and three People’s Choice awards. Conducted by North Carolina Modernist Houses, a digital extension of a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of Modern architecture, the submissions must be located in the South, but designers can be based outside of the region.

The jury panel included Jeanne Gang, FAIA, founder and principal of Chicago-based Studio Gang Architects; Eric Gartner, AIA, a partner of New York–based SPG Architects; Beverley David Thorne, the last living architect to have participated in Arts & Architecture‘s famous Case Study Houses based out of Oakland, Calif.; Peter Gluck, principal of New York–based firm GLUCK+; and Harry Bates, principal and cofounder of New York–based firm Bates Masi.

George Matsumoto, FAIA, who has over thirty awards for his residential work, served as honorary chair. The Modernist designer and educator, who studied under Eliel Saarinen while earning his graduate degree on scholarship at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, is tied to North Carolina by way of joining Henry Kamphoefner at North Carolina State University when he was appointed the first dean at the College of Design (formerly known as the School of Design).
