Gehry Partners has been chosen as the lead designer of the national memorial to Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th U.S. president. Also on the design team are EDAW (landscape architecture), L’Observatoire International (lighting design), and ESI Design (information design). The memorial—which will be built on a four-acre site across from the National Air and Space Museum along Independence Avenue—will be the seventh national presidential memorial in Washington, D.C., and the first since the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial opened in 1997. No design has been submitted yet, and no expected date of completion has been announced.
Run by the General Services Administration as part of its Design Excellence Program, the three-stage competition began in August 2008 with 44 design firms. The three other finalist firms were Krueck & Sexton Architects, Peter Walker and Partners Landscape Achitecture, and Rogers Marvel Architects.
