The Atlanta Braves announced in November that they were packing up their baseball mitts and leaving Turner Field, the team’s home since 1997, for a new stadium in Cobb County. While the team argues that the move actually pushes them closer to their fans (and posted a map to prove it), the plan has been criticized for moving the team away from downtown Atlanta. (Although a Braves fact sheet says the “property has an Atlanta address.”)
Regardless, the project is moving forward. On Wednesday, the team released concept renderings of the project, which is slated to open in 2017. Kansas City, Mo.–based firm Populous is designing the $672 million, 41,500-seat stadium, and the Venice, Calif.–based Jerde Partnership is designing the overall master plan. (ARCHITECT visited The Jerde Partnership in 2011.) An architect for the mixed-use portion of the complex has not yet been finalized, according to a project spokesperson over email.
