Norris, Tenn., continues to be a learning experiment in sustainable living. In 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority built a model community to showcase simply, prefab houses equipped with then-modern amenities such as electricity, heating, and indoor plumbing. Building on the concept of marrying simplicity and modernity for better performance, recent students at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville College of Architecture and Design crated the New Norris House, a single-family home that won a 2013 AIA COTE Top Ten Project designation for its high-performance attributes.
