The AIA Houston Chapter recognized 12 distinct projects in the city’s surrounding area for their excellent design in commercial architecture, residential architecture, interior architecture, restoration/renovation, and urban design. Winners were picked from among 108 total submissions by jurors Wendy Evans Joseph, FAIA, Matt Kreilich, AIA, and Jing Liu.

Award Won: Architecture Greater Than 50,000 Square Feet
The new 70,000 square foot building for the Engineering and Manufacturing Institute for Lone Star College in Houston by Morris Architects provides and integrated classroom and lab space to operate as a community college.
Award Won: Architecture Less Than 50,000 Square Feet
Taniguchi & Associates, Kendall/Heaton Associates, and Geoffrey Brune, FAIA, blended the Asia Society Texas Center into a residential area by respecting the two-story height, and incorporating public gardens and spaces.
Award Won: Residential Architecture
The Gewinner Residence consists of a minimalist plan utilizing glass as a major design element to take advantage of the views in the Texas Hill Country.
LOJO Architects designed the Nested House to evoke qualities of traditional yurt construction from Kazakhstan, where the client is originally from.
Large homes consume a majority of outdoor spaces in Houston’s residential market, so the clients desired an efficient and modest home that would relieve summer heat. Murphy Mears Architects and Wm. T. Cannady, FAIA constructed the Zaguan House, which contains an open air portal, or zaguan, to cool the interior.
Award Won: Restoration/Renovation
Located in Houston’s Old Sixth Ward Historic District, the neglected house was subject to design guidelines in order to complete the Decatur Street Renovation and Addition by kinneymorrow architecture. To enhance the historical features, the architects extended the house to the back of the lot, and kept the original materials and detailing for the exterior.
Kirksey Architecture renovated Beth Yeshurun Day School to enhance how children interact and learn by incorporating more natural light, color and transparency within the interiors.
Due to severe hurricane damage, Kirksey Architecture renovated and restored the Harris County Precinct Two Sylvan Beach Pavilion to bring the historical building back to life after closing in 2008. While the restorations preserve the mid-century modern designs, the renovations enable it to meet current coastal windstorm requirements.
Stern and Bucek Architects conserved and renovated 1305 South Boulevard, formerly known as the C. Milby Dow residence, to accentuate the two-story Georgian’s home historic fabric and update certain rooms such as the kitchen and master bathroom.
Award Won: Interior Architecture
Rame and Russell Hruska, the principals at Intexture Architect, designed Tripartite House as a three-story house to engage the public’s view yet maintain the privacy of their home.
Daryl Howard Art, a mixed-use building for printmaking and hosting in Austin, commissioned kinneymorrow architecture to construct a new printing studio to an existing storage center while providing supporting structures to cohesively combine these parts.
Rottet Studio renovated a new office space for Seyfarth Shaw, a global law firm, to promote a team-oriented atmosphere by integrating more circulation and natural light.
