A new art installation is coming to New York’s Flatiron Building later this year. Designed by Brooklyn firm Inaba, “New York Light” won the inaugural Flatiron Plaza Holiday Design Competition, a joint project between the Van Alen Institute and the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership. The Van Alen Institute also collaborated on this year’s Times Square Valentine, a similar New York public art project.
Inaba‘s LED-lit steel installation includes mirror panels designed to reflect the urban landscape, and is oriented to highlight views of the Flatiron Building as well as the Empire State Building. The firm worked with New York–based Tillotson Design Associates (lighting design), Ben Gal Fierro (fabrication), and BuroHappold (structural engineering).
The design team beat out ideas by six other teams: New York’s EFGH Architectural Design Studio, New York’s e+i studio, artist Chris Jordan with Brooklyn’s Moey, Brooklyn’s RSVP Architecture Studio, New York’s SCAPE / Landscape Architecture, and New York’s Stereotank.
“New York Light” is scheduled to be installed shortly before Thanksgiving and be displayed through December.
